DESCRIPTION:An Encore Presentation\nPresented by 303 Associates\nClick the orange “Book A Program” button to RSVP\nPat Conroy Literary Center executive director Jonathan Haupt and poet Tim Conroy will discuss the nature writing of Pat Conroy\, the bestselling author of The Water Is Wide\, The Great Santini\, The Prince of Tides\, and more. From his obscure boyhood poetry to his beloved lyrical adult prose\, Conroy wrote about the beauty of our natural world as both wondrous and perilous\, using the lowcountry not only as a setting but as the central character of his many books. This presentation will highlight representative examples of Conroy’s nature writing from across the span of his writing life\, drawing attention to how Conroy’s relationship with nature is also ultimately a relationship with his deeply felt spiritual and humanistic faith. The presenters will be assisted by students from DAYLO (the Diversity Awareness Youth Literacy Organization)\, who will be reading from Pat Conroy’s work and sharing some original creative pieces in response. \nAbout Our Presenters: \nTim Conroy is the author of the collections Theologies of Terrain and No True Route\, is a poet and retired educator. His work has appeared in Fall Lines\, Blue Mountain Review\, Jasper Magazine\, Marked by the Water\, Sheltered\, Twelve Mile Review\, Poetry on the Comet\, The Post and Courier\, Ukweli: Searching for Healing Truth\, DWG Anthology\, and Our Prince of Scribes: Writers Remember Pat Conroy. In 2022\, he received the Broad River Prize for prose from Fall Lines\, Volume IX. A founding board member of the Pat Conroy Literary Center established in his brother’s honor. \nJonathan Haupt is the executive director of the nonprofit Pat Conroy Literary Center\, the past director of the University of South Carolina Press\, and co-editor of the anthology Our Prince of Scribes: Writers Remember Pat Conroy\, winner of 17 book awards. He is a frequent guest book reviewer for the Pulitzer Prize-winning Charleston Post and Courier. DESCRIPTION:Many years after the success of the Port Royal Experiment and the start of the Reconstruction Era in Beaufort county\, the pinnacle of the constitutional crisis and drama of the era erupted in Washington DC. Through the lenses of three presidents\, Andrew Johnson\, Ulysses S. Grant\, and Rutherford B. Hayes\, we will explore the parallel timeline of Reconstruction and how a new nation was formed. \nEmma has a BA in History and Civil War Era Studies from Gettysburg College and an MA in Public History focused in Civil War Memory from the University of West Georgia. She has been with the NPS since 2012\, working at sites such as Andrew Johnson NHS\, Gettysburg NMP\, and Vicksburg NMP. Joining the team at Reconstruction Era NHP in 2023\, Emma is now a park ranger and volunteer coordinator here in Beaufort\, SC.

DESCRIPTION: \nDr. Eric Montie’s research program focuses on fish & marine mammal biology and the bioacoustics of marine life with applied applications in environmental toxicology\, noise pollution and climate change. His team utilizes passive acoustic recorders mounted on oceanographic instrument frames that allow continuous and long-term sampling of the underwater soundscape. These recordings provide information on the behavior of snapping shrimp\, spawning patterns of fish\, foraging patterns and communication of bottlenose dolphins and noise levels associated with human activity. \nThe long-term goal is to ‘eavesdrop’ on key behaviors of marine animals that can change rapidly or gradually in response to environmental changes and human impacts\, thus providing a measure of resilience or shifting baselines in a globally changing environment. \nIn 2020\, Montie founded the Estuarine Soundscape Observatory Network in the Southeast (or ESONS)\, which now monitors biological sound and human-made noise in four estuaries of South Carolina. In addition\, he supervises the Lowcountry Dolphin Conservation Program\, which focuses on the population dynamics and ecology of common bottlenose dolphins in the Port Royal Sound Area. \nDuring this talk\, Dr. Montie will discuss major highlights of these two monitoring programs that have been observed over the past 10 years.

Dive in with us as we explore the horseshoe crab and investigate the life cycle and adaptations of this living fossil. \nDawn Brut (Brut rhymes with hut) is the Director of Education at the Coastal Discovery Museum. She is originally from Pittsburgh\, PA but has lived in the south (first North Carolina now South Carolina) since 2004. Dawn has a Secondary Biology Teacher Certification and a degree in Biology and Art from Thiel (pronounced Teal) College in PA. She was previously the Environmental Education and School Program Coordinator at the Don Lee Center in NC. Dawn joined the Coastal Discovery Museum staff in February 2013 and is responsible for coordinating and leading educational experiences focused on the Lowcountry’s natural history and cultural heritage. She has been living in Beaufort for the past three years\, conducting archaeological research aimed at understanding the small-scale\, social dynamics of early 18th century Yamasee towns. \nFor millennia in the Southeast\, US\, Indigenous women provisioned their families as forager-farmers\, organized familial and diplomatic relationships\, lead their communities as spiritual and political leaders\, and acted as agents of social continuity and change. Andy originally hails from Kingsport\, TN\, and Raleigh\, NC\, where his natural history interests began at an early age (his first field notes – counting toads in the front yard – were written when he was 5 years old). He studied biological sciences at the University of Tennessee\, and completed his PhD on the evolutionary history of Philippine birds at the University of Minnesota. \nFrom 2006 until early 2022\, he worked as curator of ornithology at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. There\, he continued research on birds using genetic tools\, spanning topics such as the taxonomy of terns of the world\, identifying newly discovered hybrid combinations in the wild\, and the evolutionary history of boreal bird species. He also became one of the team leads on Lights Out Cleveland\, a group working with building managers to turn lights off during migration as well as coordinating volunteers to recover injured and dead birds that collided with buildings. \nAlong the way\, Dr. Jones has been active in nonprofit leadership. He has served as a board member and on the research committee of Black Swamp Bird Observatory\, as a board member of Winous Point Marsh Conservancy\, and as Secretary of the American Ornithological Society. He has been recognized as a Fellow of the American Ornithological Society for his contributions to ornithology. A battle ensued from unlikely citizen groups who banded together to defeat the political forces behind the push for an industrial site to be located on the Colleton River\, between Bluffton and Hilton Head Island. BASF’s defeat was a victory for the environment and changed the way the state courted future industry. Superintendent Rogers will provide a presentation on the ecological and cultural connections across the South Atlantic Bight highlighting decades of monitoring and scientific research conducted by Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary and partners. The presentation will also provide an overview of current management activities and a look-ahead at upcoming management plan review\, 30X30 initiatives\, and how you can get involved. \nAs Superintendent of Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary\, Stan directs resource protection\, scientific research and monitoring\, education and outreach\, and marine operations including two research vessels and Scuba diving activities. Prior to joining the Sanctuary in 2019\, he led policy\, planning\, and communications efforts for the NOAA Restoration Center in NOAA Fisheries’ Office of Habitat Conservation\, and led Endangered Species Act consultations on word-wide U.S. Navy Training and Testing Activities. Prior to working at NOAA\, Stan was a natural and cultural resources program manager for the Department of the Air Force overseeing these programs at 26 military installations across the Continental U.S.\, Alaska\, Hawai’i\, Greenland\, Ascension Island\, and Antigua and leading conservation law enforcement program agency-wide. Stan is a native of the Lowcountry and a Clemson grad. By the latter half of the 20th century\, due to a variety of factors\, it disappeared entirely from the United States and was thought to have been hybridized into extinction. However\, two varieties from Edisto Island were recently rediscovered and are being returned to small-scale cultivation.\nPresented by Tom Austin\, Land Protection Specialist for the Edisto Island Open Land Trust

Most species of songbirds migrate at night\, and lights can disorient them and draw them into collision situations\, though citizen science efforts are working to curtail these collisions.
