What was once a swamp and bottomland hardwood forest now Savannah NWR is an interconnected waterfowl and shorebird haven created by South Carolina’s infamous rice culture. Several miles of drivable dikes connect these manmade impoundments and leave tales of the atrocities that have turned into opportunities. This property is currently the largest state land purchase in South Carolina history. It boasts various habitats from black water rivers\, Cypress Tupelo swamps\, bottomland hardwood forests\, and longleaf pine savanna.
