$29,988 Grant Awarded to PRSF from South Carolina Arts Commission
The Port Royal Sound Foundation (PRSF) has received a $29,988 General Operations Support (GOS) grant from the South Carolina Arts Commission. This grant supports PRSF’s ongoing arts initiatives and educational programming for children and adults. PRSF believes art is vital to connect people to their local environment, providing everyone a chance to be inspired by the natural world and advocate for its conservation.
In 2023, PRSF’s rotating art room welcomed many local professional artists, all depicting a unique aspect of the Lowcountry’s culture and environment. Featured exhibits included “Gifts from the Boneyard,” a fiber arts and photography display inspired by Hunting Island; “How da Wada Kept Oona,” a celebration of Gullah Geechee art and culture; and a mixed-media display by Abraham Brown highlighting Lowcountry culture, landscapes, and wildlife. All of these exhibits were paired with a reception, inviting the public to appreciate the beautiful works of art in-person and meet the artists behind the pieces.
PRSF also hosts an array of programs for people of all ages, many of which use art as a way to teach people about the environment and our community. On field trips, school children often complete an art activity in conjunction with an environmental lesson. Our free weekly summer story time connects our youngest visitors to art through an ocean-inspired book reading and craft. Families enjoy participating in public STEAM programs throughout the year, as well as our annual STEAM Festival, which includes community art projects. Our annual Maritime Marketplace offers a venue for artists to share their work with the community, just in time for the holidays. Artists of all ages and experience levels love to participate in our annual Recycled Art Contest, showcasing both incredible talent and a dedication to conservation. This is just a sampling of the many programs PRSF is proud to offer. Thank you to the South Carolina Arts Commission, which receives support from the National Endowment for the Arts, for making these programs possible.
