A Successful State of the Sound Symposium

The Port Royal Sound Foundation’s first State of the Sound Symposium sponsored by Dominion Energy & The Spring Island Trust, was held on February 11, 2022. Moderated by Dr. Chris Marsh, 11 area experts from SC Department of Natural Resources and University of South Carolina Beaufort gave a series of short talks explaining what knowledge currently exists about the ecology of the Port Royal Sound. Presentations covered an array of topics including crustaceans, fish, underwater soundscapes, dolphins, shorebirds, water quality, geology, and land use. A roundtable discussion followed that explored how future research can help us better understand and protect this incredible resource in the heart of the Lowcountry.

Over 135 viewers watched live, and select recordings are now available to share with those who could not attend: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLAv_68a8MqnvXUf6ggGXXkefjMS4__E5E

PRSF has plans to create follow-up material in the form of informative videos, a formal technical report, a shortened public report, and additional publicity to raise awareness of the critical research happening on the Port Royal Sound.

Please contact Kat Armstrong (karmstrong@portroyalsoundfoundation.org) with any questions or feedback regarding the symposium.
