The Port Royal Sound Foundation offers community presentations and nature-based experiences to expose the natural wonders of the Port Royal Sound directly to you and your community groups. Become engulfed in the natural world that surrounds our community through in-person talks and wildlife experiences such as reptile programs, birding, and nature hikes.

Reptiles of the Lowcountry
Snakes, Turtles, Lizards, and Alligators areย a common site in South Carolina that boasts the most herpetofauna diversity compared to theย landmass of any of the southeastern states. These animals create a sense of wonder and disgust, this program is created to familiarize yourself with the reptiles that call the Lowcountry home, which animals can be dangerous, and why the only good reptile is a live reptile. Ecology of the Sea Islands
Explore the Sea Islands of the Lowcountry from past to present. Learn how this unique landscape was formed how wildlife and humans have impacted the area and what is at threat in today’s age.
Lowcountry Citizen Scientist
The Port Royal Sound Foundation has created a robust research program partnering with various government agencies, universities, and NGOs. A major limiting factor to conduct this work is manpower. How is it possible to monitor the health of an expansive unique coastal estuarine system? The answer is through community involvement through citizen science. Learn how you can get involved in our growing research initiatives.
Diamonds in the Marsh: Terrapins in our waterways
The Diamondback Terrapin is the only turtle in South Carolina that lives exclusively in our salt marsh. A beautiful cryptic turtle species historically used for human consumption and hasย an unusual natural history. learn what makes these turtles so unique and what is being done to better understand population health in the Port Royal Sound. Invertebrates Everywhere
Invertebrates make up the largest percentage of animals in the world, nearly 98% of all living organisms. Yet, many know very little about this massive group of organisms. Learn about some of the common and not-so-common animals that fill our waterways and why some of these animals are important ecologically and commercially.
Backyard Bio-Blitz
Whatโs that Bird? Eek a Snake! Ooh, a pretty butterfly! This presentation will familiarize you and make you comfortable with the native flora and fauna you may encounter during your daily outdoor adventures. This program is meant to make you feel comfortable living with wildlife and explain why these critters are so important to the health of our ecosystem and community. LIVE ANIMALS
The American Alligator: Ecosystem Engineers and Protectors
Who doesn’t enjoy seeing a 12-foot lizard basking on the banks of a serene spring day. A misunderstood and feared animal that we as residents are coming more frequently engaged with. This program is intended to help you better understand the behaviors of these keystone species, the does and donts, and get you up close and personal building healthy respect to our full-time residents the American Alligator.
Birding 101
The Lowcountry is home to a diverse array of birds. Wadding birds, waterfowl, raptors and non-descript little brown birds (LBB for short), where do you even start? Birding 101 lays out the tools and the steps to become an expert backyard birder. After this lecture you will never leave your binoculars at home!
