Explore why we should know and appreciate the life, legacy, and contributions of Robert Smalls with local author, Rebecca Bruff. Robert Smalls, born enslaved, liberated himself and others in a larger-than-life escape to freedom. After the Civil War, he was elected to state and then national leadership, and – among other things – helped create the first free and compulsory public education system in the country.
*Copies of Rebecca’s book, “Trouble the Water” will be available for purchase & signing at this talk.
