Watershed Walk: Savannah NWR

Savannah National Wildlife Refuge is a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service property located along the banks of the Savannah River. What was once a swamp and bottomland hardwood forest now Savannah NWR is an interconnected waterfowl and shorebird haven created by South Carolinaโ€™s infamous rice culture. Several miles of drivable dikes connect these manmade impoundments and leave tales of the atrocities that have turned into opportunities. Explore rice culture and the diverse habitat left behind as we witness shorebirds and waterfowl by the thousands.
