PRS Field Guide | Plants

Plants play an essential role in supporting animals and in maintaining a healthy Port Royal Sound watershed. Plants are a very broad category that includes trees, grasses, flowers, submerged vegetation, and even algae. Plants are producers, which means they create their own energy through the process of photosynthesis. Species of plants are organized into biomes or ecoregions that are defined by climate, soil types, light, moisture, and other environmental conditions. Within the Port Royal Sound watershed, we find different plant species in our salt marshes, maritime forests, sea islands, hammocks, tidal creeks, and barrier islands.
