PRS Field Guide | Birds

Birds are a class of endothermic (warm-blooded) vertebrates (have backbones) most identifiable by their wings and feathers. In the Port Royal Sound watershed, birds depend on different habitat types. We see many species of songbirds or perching birds in our yards, meadows, and perching in trees. Other groups of birds depend on water habitat – we often find shorebirds running along our beaches and mudflats; we see wading birds hunting or feeding along the edges of our marshes and ponds; and especially in winter, we see and hear waterfowl flying overhead, and swimming in small creeks and ponds. We have many species of birds of prey – eagles, hawks, and owls – that live across the watershed. Many birds are migratory, but many of them are full-time residents of the Port Royal Sound watershed. Get out your binoculars and get ready to learn about some of the amazing bird species of the Port Royal Sound watershed!
