Fish are vertebrates (have backbones) that live in water and breathe underwater using their gills. Most fish are ectothermic (cold-blooded) and in the Port Royal Sound watershed most live in saltwater habitats, though you might find some freshwater fish species in ponds and blackwater rivers. Since the Port Royal Sound is essentially an inland sea of the Atlantic Ocean, we see several species of normally ocean-dwelling or pelagic fish that come into the Sound to feed and lay their eggs. As many as 20 different species of shark and rays have been recorded in the Sound! We also have many other species of fish that spend their whole lives in the Port Royal Sound, relying on the marshes for food and habitat.
